This model is part of our standard ready to runs which have been cleverly tooled and designed with a cast tender and cab to create a cost effective range of locomotives whilst still maintaining the outstanding quality and finish that DJH Model Loco is known for. By using larger components and removing intricate brass etchings from the build, we are able to produce these ready to runs in a shorter time frame – reducing the cost.
LNER/BR ‘Thompson’ B1 4-6-0
Edward Thompson succeeded Gresley in April 1941 as Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LNER. His plan was to introduce a series of standard designs to fulfill the current requirements of the LNER. What was needed at the time was a good hard working, mixed traffic, two cylinder 4-6-0 locomotive. One of Thompson’s first design to meet these requirements was the B1 Class, a War time engine that proved to be very successful in handling the increased volume of traffic, both passenger and freight in those very difficult and uncertain times. The two cylinder layout of the B1’s were most welcome to the Maintenance and Running Shed Departments, after struggling to keep the three cylinder engines in good running order under War time conditions. The first ten B1’s were turned out by Darlington Works, No.8301 “Springbok” being the first in 1942. Following on from the highly successful Peppercorn A1, Gresley V2 and Britannia Class 7 models the Thompson B1 will be completely designed and manufactured in our own UK factory. It will Include the powerful Slaters GB14 motor/gearbox, Slaters wheels and is fully painted and lined and comes with a full 12 months factory warranty.
