The 9F was the last and unquestionably one of the greatest steam locomotive designs ever produced in this country. Though many of these big 2-10-0’s saw only a few years of service their tremendous power, reliability and versatility made them a favourite with the operating departments of all BR regions. This version has the high-sided tender found on a total of 85 9Fs originally allocated to the London Midland Region (Nos 92015-19/45-59/77-86/100-39/50-64).
These were all single-chimney engines. They spent their working lives on heavy freight work but some of them had a brief period of glory in the late 1950s and early 1960s when they were used on summer holiday excursions.
The locomotive body is largely in whitemetal, with fold-up etched cab and smoke deflectors and tender. The kit also includes alternative single and double chimneys and other detail variations including a set of nameplates for Evening Star to enable individual members of the class to be accurately modeled.
